Professional Statement
Early exposure to healthcare led Dr. John Loftus to choose a career in medicine. His father was a cardiologist and his mother was a nurse; this background, along with his interest in the sciences, led him to pursue medicine.
Dr. Loftus specializes in vascular and general surgery and cares for adult patients. He was first drawn to these fields because they combine hands-on care with problem-solving and allow one to develop long-term relationships with patients. He values the ability to treat complex conditions while helping improve a patient’s quality of life.
Dr. Loftus treats a wide range of conditions, including diseases of the blood vessels such as aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, venous insufficiency and varicose veins. He also performs dialysis access surgery. In general surgery, he treats hernias, performs gallbladder removal and provides intestinal surgery. He earned his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and completed his residency and fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic. He also completed additional training in endovascular surgery at Stanford University. He is board-certified in surgery with added qualifications in vascular surgery. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Vascular Surgery and the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association.
Patients often describe Dr. Loftus as a dedicated and skilled surgeon. He works to care for patients the same way he would want his own family to be treated. During visits, he listens carefully, takes time to build a relationship and creates thoughtful care plans based on each patient’s needs.
His approach to care is guided by a strong focus on what is best for the patient. He believes in teamwork and using shared knowledge to provide the highest level of care. He finds meaning in getting to know new patients and supporting them through serious health conditions, including surgery and recovery.
Outside of work, Dr. Loftus enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, golfing, hiking, skiing and photography.
