Professional Statement
As an OB/GYN, I treat women through the whole realm of life, from puberty through childbirth and into menopause. I like the variety that provides. It allows me to treat the whole person.
Obviously delivering babies is a favorite. There is no better thing. It is equally rewarding and satisfying for me, however, when I am able to connect with a patient and explain a problem and what I think I can do to help. When a patient tears up and says to me, "you are the first person who ever understood what I'm talking about," that is extremely satisfying.
I have spent a long time learning how to listen to people instead of just telling them what I think. I spend the time to get to know and figure out what is going on. I invest my time in my patients. I don't talk over or above them. I take the time to explain things to them at whatever level they need. I do this so they can know and feel that they've been heard.
I definitely knew I wanted to be an obstetrician since childhood. I wanted to deliver babies. It was in college, that I learned everything else that is involved in obstetrics and gynecology - and I still knew it was what I wanted to do.
I am also very much into natural health and nutrition. I went back to school after becoming a doctor just to learn more about it and now I have a Master's degree in it. So anything that has to do with mind/body healing, eating real whole foods and using fresh wholesome ingredients in cooking, is something I advocate and enjoy.
Spiritual and physical fitness are key to me: yoga, hiking and getting into nature are hobbies I enjoy and recommend. It helps in centering yourself and getting through life's stresses. This is important, especially for women, because I don't think we always realize how much stress takes a toll on our bodies. So if I am going to help other women, I feel I have to stay as healthy as possible, not only to be a role model but to speak from experience. I can say to my patients, "I tried this, you may like it."
